If you do not possess the traditional qualifications, such as A Levels then the Access to HE diploma is an excellent alternative route to university. This diploma is accepted by most UK universities and helps prepare you for the demands of higher education. It has been specially constructed to suit the needs of potential students who have been out of education for some time.
We strongly recommend that you first select the degree course you would like to study, and make sure that the university you wish to attend is happy with this Access to HE Diploma. Once you have checked that it meets their entrance criteria, you will know that this course is the right path for you.
This programme is suitable for adult returners to learning or those with few or no traditional qualifications to help you prepare for higher education and university.
This qualification gives you the relevant academic subject knowledge needed for higher education study and the opportunity to develop study skills to help you succeed. It is well established and widely accepted by universities, qualifying for UCAS tariff points that are comparable to the tariff points for three A Levels.
If you're a UK resident aged 19 or over then you may have pay your own fees but you can apply for the government backed Advanced Learner Loan. This will be paid back in monthly instalments but the payments only begin once you've finished the Access to HE diploma and are earning over over a certain amount - please check here for up-to-date details.
Ideally, once you've finished the Access to HE diploma you'll then go on to complete a higher education (HE) qualification, such as a degree course. The outstanding balance of your Advanced Learner Loan will then be written off.
You will achieve a nationally recognised Access certificate, giving you the confidence to go on to university. The QAA Approved Access certificate is validated by one of the leading Awarding Bodies (OCN London) and is an entry qualification to universities and colleges across the United Kingdom. In addition, you can gain certificates in GCSE English and maths.
Although applicants for our Access to HE Diploma require few set formal qualifications, a GCSE at grade C (5) or above in either English or maths is required. You will also be asked to complete diagnostic assessments in both English and maths to establish that you are ready to study at Level 3. In addition, students need good motivation and a commitment to complete the diploma and proceed on to a degree or other higher education qualification locally or elsewhere throughout the United Kingdom.
As part of the interview process, you will be required to undertake diagnostic assessments at Level 2 in English and maths and produce a piece of free writing.
The course is taught by a mixture of classroom teaching, key skills, tutorials, assignments and self-directed study. You will have a variety of assessment methods including essays, presentation, seminars and time-constrained assignments.
Located at Highbury Campus, classes run three to four days a week, in a combination of mornings, afternoons and evenings.
Students wanting to study GCSE English or maths will attend these classes to fit in with their main access timetable - a variety of choices will be offered.
Learners primarily progress to higher education study in areas related to business studies.
