This apprenticeship is ideal for those who have an interest in the bricklaying occupation but have no formal training.
You will lay bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches, and other structures, such as chimney stacks. You might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects.
The range of sites and projects you could work on include large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions and restorations.
You’ll also learn about health, safety and welfare in construction, and the principles of high-quality customer service and communication methods.
To successfully complete the apprenticeship, you will need both maths and English at grade 3 or above, or Functional Skills Level 1. If necessary, these can be studied at College alongside your apprenticeship.
You will be required to attend College one day per week throughout the duration of the apprenticeship programme.
You will spend six hours of your apprenticeship working towards your off-the-job learning, which can consist of College attendance, homework/coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring, and coaching – plus other tasks.
Throughout your apprenticeship, you will need to gather work-based evidence and submit this work onto your e-portfolio system – Onefile. Your evidence will then be assessed by your teacher and feedback will be provided.
It is important for you to take ownership of your own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with your employer. Learning in College will be delivered through a mixture of practical delivery and application and theoretical knowledge which will help to build your knowledge, skills and behaviours. You will also be required to complete independent study and research.
Your final grade will be determined in the endpoint assesment, by a collective performance in three areas:
• online knowledge-based tests
• skills test (knowledge and behaviours are observed in the workplace)
• professional discussion (to demonstrate you can apply the broad range of knowledge, skills and behaviours across the Apprenticeship Standard).
You can progress to a higher-level full-time course or apprenticeship within the construction industry, such as site management or surveying.
