If you have completed your Level 2 apprenticeship and you want to advance your knowledge and skills to cover more complex carpentry, then the natural fit is the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Advanced Carpentry & Joinery at City of Portsmouth College.
You'll normally work on a building site, or in domestic and commercial premises, preparing and installing complex and often bespoke building components such as high-quality doors, shaped linings, staircases with turns, complex wall and floor units, bespoke structural carpentry and complex roof structures. The main difference between the Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeship is that the carpenter has responsibility for managing their own and other people's work, as well as being required to complete complex and non-standard work.
Units include:
- working safely and pro-actively in the application of good health and safety practice
- understanding the programme and work schedule and planning work accordingly
- developing and maintaining good working relationships with managers, supervisors and colleagues
- determining the best way of carrying out work and ensuring this is clearly communicated
- interpreting technical specifications and ensure compliance with relevant legislation/guidance
- selecting the required quantity and quality of resources required
- being prepared to take a lead when working in a team, especially when complex or non-standard work is involved.
To be able to enter onto this apprenticeship programme you will need both maths and English at grade 4 or above or Functional Skills Level 2.
You will be required to attend our North Harbour Campus. College attendance is one day per week.
It is a government requirement for you to spend a minimum of six hours per week of your apprenticeship working towards your off-the-job learning which can consist of college attendance, homework/coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring and coaching – plus other tasks.
Throughout your apprenticeship you will need to gather work-based evidence and submit this work onto your e-portfolio system- Onefile. Your evidence will then be assessed by your lecturer and feedback will be provided.
It is important for you to take ownership of your own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with your employer. Learning in College will be delivered through a mixture of practical delivery and application and theoretical knowledge which will help to build your knowldge, skills and behaviours. You will also be required to complete independent study and research.
Your final grade will be determined through end point assessment, by a collective performance of three areas:
- Online knowledge test
- Practical skills test
- Professional discussion/interview (to demonstrate that you can apply a broad range of knowldge, skills and behaviours in the standard).
You could progress to a wide range of employment opportunities or move to full or part-time further education.
This standard meets the requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Advanced Skilled Worker standard and is widely recognised as a licence to operate in a skilled construction trade.
