Three tiny chicks have hatched at City of Portsmouth College's Animal Care Centre

City of Portsmouth College’s Animal Care students have some new residents to take care of – and just in time for Easter!

Three adorable Serama chicks have successfully hatched after being kindly donated by a local breeder from eggs and carefully incubated by the COPC team. Two chicks arrived on March 25, with the third arriving a day later.

While the cute little trio haven’t yet been named, or sexed, they are already making a big impact, as students are now learning new handling and training techniques, alongside specialised husbandry – and being able to follow their biology and development from day one makes this an exciting and valuable learning journey.

April Wilson, Lecturer in Animal Care, said: “Due to their small size, docile temperament, and specialised care requirements, these chicks are a fantastic addition to our animal collection, giving students the opportunity to learn about livestock across all levels of animal care. This will include developing knowledge and skills in husbandry, biology, and welfare practices as part of their course.”
