Recognise the signs and understand the effects that distressed behaviour has in children and young people, then this course at City of Portsmouth College will help develop your knowledge and skills.

On this course, you'll cover a range of topics, and units may include:

  • awareness of distressed behaviour in children
  • principles of intervention when working with children who display distressed behaviour
  • distressed behaviour and mental health in children
  • distressed behaviour and learning disabilities in children
  • distressed behaviour, sensory processing conditions and autism spectrum conditions in children
  • legislation and guidance for an individual providing support to children displaying distressed behaviour.

You'll be expected to have at least a Level 1 qualification in English, which will be assessed before starting the course.

This qualification is online only so you can study it at your own pace in your own workspace.

This is a distance learning course, with 110 guided hours. Assessment must meet the requirements of the identified assessment strategy/principles. All learning outcomes must be met to achieve a pass.

After successfully finishing this course, you could go on to study;

  • Level 2 Certificate in Caring for Children & Young People 
  • Levle 2 Certificate in Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)
  • Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children & Young People's Mental Health 

School Leavers under the age of 19 do not have to pay fees on any full time courses, though may have to pay for their second year if turning 19 during their studies. If you’re aged 19 or over you might qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. It’s easy to apply for and you won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £25,000. If you are studying a part-time course and you receive one of the following benefits, or you depend financially on someone who does, you may be entitled to have your tuition fees waived: Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support. You will, however, have to pay any awarding body/assessment fees (unless you are on a first full level 2 course). * If you are in receipt of Working Tax Credit or receive other allowances, you may be eligible to claim concessionary rates. If you are entitled to a fee concession you will be asked to provide proof of your entitlement. It is essential that you inform us if your entitlement changes at any time during your course.
