Careers within the carpentry & joinery industry
Carpenter/Joiner
Carpenters/Joiners work on construction sites installing frameworks, doors, windows, staircases and roofing.
Main responsibilities:
- Work with clients or site managers to understand plans and project needs
- Cut and shape timber for doors, flooring and window frames
- Build and install structural features like staircases and skirting boards
- Create and assemble both fitted and free-standing furniture
- Fit kitchens, cabinets, shelving and other interior woodwork
Salary range:
£24,000 - £40,000
Shopfitter
Shopfitters design and install interiors for shops, offices, bars and restaurants.
Main responsibilities:
- Make bespoke units and fittings from wood, metal, glass and/or plastics
- Take measurements on site and follow design plans to prepare accurate layouts

- Work alongside electricians, tilers and other trades to complete spaces
- Help cost and plan projects by preparing estimates, bids and quotes
