Performing Arts students will take advantage of our unique partnership with Portsmouth’s stunning Kings Theatre, gaining real-life experience performing on the iconic Grade II listed, historic stage.
Music Performance students experience the thrill of real stages, performing live at iconic venues like the Wedgwood Rooms and even on the national stage at Victorious Festival, where two college bands are selected to play each year.
From on-stage productions to festival crowds, learners gain the confidence, exposure, and experience to take their moment in the spotlight and launch their Performing Arts & Music careers.

Are you ready to take the spotlight? At City of Portsmouth College, we’ll help you be ready for centre stage.
Performing Arts and Music are hugely popular subjects here, and not least because of the amazing exposure you’ll enjoy thanks to our incredible industry links. Our unique partnership with Kings Theatre and Theatre Royal gives students the chance to learn and showcase acting, singing and dancing skills not just in our own studio theatre but also on the Kings stage.
Dancers attend workshops at London’s famous Pineapple Studios and choreograph our entry to the Dance Live competition. Aspiring music producers are mentored by students at the University of Portsmouth, visit iconic Abbey Road Studios, and gain work experience at Express FM. Music performance students may take part in Battle of the Bands, and perform at Southsea’s Wedgewood Rooms and even Victorious Festival.

Actor
Actors bring characters to life on stage, screen and radio.
Main responsibilities:
- Prepare for, and go to, auditions to get acting work
- Research roles, learn lines and attend rehearsals
- Perform on stage, in television and film
- Be a voice of adverts, computer games and audiobooks
- Spend time on tour, working away from home

Composer
Composers create original music for film scores, computer games and live performance.
Main responsibilities:
- Compose new music, either for your own creativity or to fulfil a brief
- Write scores for different instruments and voices
- Collaborate with other creatives, such as directors, producers and musicians
- Get involved in the recording and production of your music
- Help to promote the music you have written

Choreographer
Choreographers design steps, movements and dances for others to perform.
Main responsibilities:
- Develop creative ideas and turn them into dance routines
- Collaborate with producers, directors, costume designers and music directors
- Choose music, costume styles and props to go with your routines
- Audition dancers and teach them your steps
- Record dance steps using a notation system

Music Therapist
Music Therapists use music to address physical and emotional challenges to clients’ wellbeing.
Main responsibilities:
- Meet clients of all ages, and work closely with families and other professionals
- Plan therapy goals and prepare sessions based on each client’s individual needs
- Use different musical styles and instruments in one-to-one or group sessions
- Keep confidential records and meet regularly with senior therapists
- Maintain instruments and help create a positive environment for therapy

Music Producer
Music Producers work with artists to develop their sound, and oversee the recording of music.
Main responsibilities:
- Choose the right studio and equipment to suit an artist or band’s music
- Advise on song choices and help shape the sound of an album or song
- Operate technical equipment for mixing and designing audio
- Support artists to create the sound they want, potentially including live performances
- Book venues, plan schedules and organise logistics for performers

Gary Street shares how our Music and Performing Arts courses are built around getting stuck in. You’ll create, mix and master tracks, explore sound design for TV, film and gaming, and learn what it takes to work as a producer or sound engineer.
We’re building our own recording studio, launching a student radio and podcast space, and giving you access to professional-standard equipment. Plus, students visit the Abbey Road Institute for workshops and studio tours, experiencing the kind of spaces used by artists like Harry Styles and Stormzy.
