Considered essential for those who are also taking one or more of the sciences at A Level, this course combines well with virtually all subjects. It supports a medical career and scientific research as well as business, finance and engineering.

Units include:

  • calculus - differentiation and integration techniques and applications
  • trigonometry - graphs, equations and identities
  • algebra - working with a variety of functions to solve problems
  • proof - meeting new methods of proving (or disproving) statements
  • mechanics - understanding how objects move and the forces involved
  • statistics - dealing with data, probability distributions and hypothesis testing.

A Level pure maths is a challenging and rewarding course which will enable you to work to a high standard and support you in developing higher-level problem-solving skills.  You will find that your algebraic skills develop rapidly as you tackle interesting and varied problems.  We will support you in structuring your revision to help achieve your full potential.

You will be offered additional opportunities throughout the course.  You could be invited to go on university problem solving days, take part in the Senior Maths Challenge and participate in mentoring schemes with other college or university students. There will also be careers and apprenticeship talks to provide ideas for future pathways.

This course can be combined with additional A Levels or a Sixth Form vocational course.

A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English language and a grade 6 or above in GCSE maths.

Assessments will comprise 60% personal investigation and 40% externally set practical exam. Your coursework is internally assessed and externally moderated.

You will have a 9.55am start, one lesson in the morning, one in the afternoon and a guaranteed 4pm finish. You will also have at least one morning and one afternoon per week free for private study.

Maths is a subject that will open many doors for you in the future.  You could go on to a career in medicine, banking, data analysis, business, architecture and many more.
