For those progressing from a Level 2 apprenticeship, looking to advance their knowledge and skills to cover more complex carpentry.
Units include:
- working safely and pro-actively in the application of good health and safety practice
- understanding the programme and work schedule and planning work accordingly
- developing and maintaining good working relationships with managers, supervisors and colleagues
- determining the best way of carrying out work and ensuring this is clearly communicated
- interpreting technical specifications and ensure compliance with relevant legislation/guidance
- selecting the required quantity and quality of resources required
- being prepared to take a lead when working in a team, especially when complex or non-standard work is involved.
You will normally work on a building site, or in domestic and commercial premises, preparing and installing complex and often bespoke building components such as high-quality doors, shaped linings, staircases with turns, complex wall and floor units, bespoke structural carpentry and complex roof structures. The main difference between the Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeship is that the carpenter has responsibility for managing their own and other people’s work, as well as being required to complete complex and non-standard work.
You will need to have already achieved maths and English GCSE at grade 4 or above or Functional Skills Level 2.
You will attend our North Harbour Campus one day a week. Your assessor will liaise with you to set up mutually convenient times for consultation and assessment visits at your place of work.
You will spend 6 hours of your apprenticeship working towards your off-the-job learning, which can consist of college attendance, homework/coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring, and coaching – plus a number of other tasks (more information can be shared).
Your final grade will be determined by collective performance in the three assessments in the endpoint assessment.
• online knowledge-based tests
• skills test (knowledge and behaviours are observed in the workplace)
• professional discussion (to demonstrate that you can apply the broad range of knowledge, skills and behaviours in the Standard).
You will build a portfolio of work and workplace assessors will be in regular contact to provide support, and to arrange onsite visits to observe your ability and skills in your daily role. It is important for you to take ownership of your own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with your employer. Learning in college will be delivered through a mixture of classes, work-related activities and independent study and research.
You could progress to a wide range of employment opportunities or move to full or part-time further education.
This standard meets the requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Advanced Skilled Worker standard and is widely recognised as a licence to operate in a skilled construction trade.
