Navigate the world of computing at a higher education level, all within a College setting, with City of Portsmouth College's Foundation Degree.

This two-year course – run in partnership with the University of Portsmouth – is open to learners of all ages. If you are finishing your Level 3 course, or you want to move into higher education without moving into university. You'll gain exceptional computing skills, technical ability and an academic mindset – all within a college environment.

Units include:

  • Programming
  • Web-based application development
  • Cyber security
  • Project management
  • Web design and development
  • Managing server environments
  • WAN technologies.

You'll gain the skills to work within the IT industry in a variety of careers and opportunities, and pick up vital experience too, with an industry placement in your second year. And when you're done, you could take your qualification into employment (or boost your current career), or progress to a top-up degree with the University of Portsmouth in a number of different specialisations.

You'll require any of the following qualifications to apply for this course.

  • UCAS points – 48-56 points to include one A Level, or equivalent  (calculate your UCAS points). Other qualifications such as vocational A Levels (AVCE) and Access courses will also be considered
  • A Levels – DEE–EEE
  • T Levels – Pass (D or E in the core) - Merit
  • BTECs (Extended Diplomas) – MM-MP

This course is taught across two and a half days a week and located at City of Portsmouth College's Highbury Campus.  There may be times when lessons move to our Sixth Form Campus, but communication of any changes will be sent to you.

To give you the best possible chance of successfully completing your qualification, 100% attendance is expected for the duration. English, maths, work experience, tutorials and employability sessions all form part of the overall qualification and non-attendance to any of these sessions may result in the overall qualification not being achieved. Continued non-attendance to any timetabled sessions may result in losing your place on the course.

This course combines both theory and practical sessions and you will be assessed in a variety of ways (activity, group work, photographic and video) which will be presented through a portfolio of evidence.

All our courses are planned around your individual learning needs, with a timetable that clearly identifies the sessions that will be taught. You will be assigned a Programme Lead who will support you throughout your time in College. Teaching staff will work closely with you to help you achieve planned learning goals. Our staff are experienced at delivering classes to meet your needs and will work with you to build your confidence and skills. Our learning centres are equipped with modern resources that will support you to achieve positive outcomes.

A nationally recognised qualification, the Foundation Degree is also equivalent to the first two thirds of an honours degree and could lead on to a top-up degree with the University of Portsmouth in a number of different specialisations.

As a partnership higher education programme, all applications and the payment of fees must be made through the University of Portsmouth. 2026-27 course fees are £6,525, which is still only two thirds of the amount you would have to pay to attend a university-based programme.

Whilst fees can be paid directly by the individual student or by an employer sponsor, all UK higher education students can access loans to cover full tuition fees, provided they have not had similar financial support previously, as well as maintenance loans  for living costs, depending on their personal financial circumstances. Loans must be repaid once you finish your course and are earning above a certain threshold. However, some students will also be eligible for additional grants, that do not require repayment, such as for learners with disabilities (Disabled Students’ Allowance), children (Parents’ Learning Allowance), or those on low incomes.

Students will generally make an online application for government student finance online through Student Finance England with advice on the process being accessible through both the College and the University.
