High-flier Stephie Zulu has checked in as cabin crew with Virgin Atlantic, straight after completing her Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel & Tourism.

The 18-year-old flew through the course, despite Covid restrictions resulting in a blended approach of remote and classroom learning.

She’s already half-way through her training with Virgin and is due to start work on her first transatlantic flights by the end of July.

Stephie and her mum Gill only moved back to the UK from Zambia just before the start of lockdown.

“I’ve always wanted to work in tourism, specifically the aviation industry,” she said. “The college course was amazing, I really enjoyed it.

“My studies gave me a great insight into the industry and the tutors have so much experience they were able to channel me in the direction I really wanted to go.”

Stephie, who’s ambition is to be an airline pilot, said she’d highly recommend the course as a way of getting into travel and tourism.

“Now the industry is booming again, they’re looking for loads of cabin crew. It’s not all glamour, it’s a lot of hard work and it takes dedication and resilience but it’s very exciting and everyone is lovely so I would say ‘go for it’ to anyone interested!”

Her mum Gill said: “I’m very proud of Stephie's achievement as she’s overcome a lot of hurdles to get her dream job, including adapting to a new culture during Covid.

“Stephie is very dedicated and motivated, being very much aware of the value of education and how it can improve your opportunities in life and I’m grateful to the tutors at City of Portsmouth College for educating her to the standard that was required by Virgin Atlantic Airways.”
