If you are a young adult with ASD and need to work in a smaller, more structured group to develop independent living and work skills, the Connect course at City of Portsmouth College is ideal.
Maths and English will be an important part of your programme and followed at the appropriate level. These will provide you with the practical skills to work confidently, effectively and independently. They open doors to learning, to life and to work, as these skills are valued by employers and further education and are a platform on which to build other employability skills. Better functional skills can mean a better future – as learners or as employees and in everyday life.
You'll have access to a wide range of enrichment activities, including art, drama, dance and sport, to help develop team, interpersonal and creative skills. There are numerous other cross-college activities to get involved with as well, and you'll run your own college-based enterprise project and enjoy external trips that develop independence and confidence.
No formal entry requirements are required apart from a willingness to learn.
100% attendance is expected for all aspects of the course. This includes maths and English, tutorial, enrichment and core lessons.
You will learn the skills you need to live with increased independence, such as shopping and day-to-day household management, budgeting your money, healthy eating, personal safety, using public transport and looking after yourself. You will also develop the skills and knowledge that will help you to identify suitable work opportunities for the future; like timekeeping, following instructions, working independently, team working and problem solving. You will be assessed through a variety of ways (pictorial, photographic and video) which will be presented via a portfolio of evidence. You will have weekly tutorials and receive regular feedback to discuss your progress.
Most Connect students will progress within the college to a higher level course within the SEND department.
