English Language, Literature & ESOL
Find your voice in English literature
At City of Portsmouth College, English literature students write, translate and publish their work through the Global Voices Project – training with the National Centre for Writing, contributing to a student anthology, and performing at events like Portsmouth’s BookFest and the College’s own showcase.
From Shakespeare to spoken word, your voice travels far beyond the classroom.

Young author scoops £10,000 prize for book about writers
We’re thrilled to see Harriet Baker has won the 2025 Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. Her debut book, Rural Hours, is a strikingly original biography of three iconic female writers: Virginia Woolf, Rosamond Lehmann and Sylvia Townsend Warner. In Rural Hours, she shows the impact moving to the countryside had on each woman’s work and imagination. Her win shows how much the literary world values fresh voices, deep knowledge and original ideas.
