Modern Languages
MODERN LANGUAGES
Subject overview

What's on offer
Wilkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome! At City of Portsmouth College we love language. It’s romantic, it’s fascinating, it’s culture and art, it enables us to converse with confidence when abroad – it even enables conversation with those with hearing loss.
Modern languages, such as those we teach here – French, Spanish, German and British Sign Language – are exceptional skills to hold in this ever-integrated world, that extra string to your bow that sets you apart from the rest when you’re looking for work, travelling, or in the case of sign language, conversing with others with hearing impairments or deafness, bridging that communication gap.
And it helps us understand different cultures, too. Studying film, art, music, in different languages and their respective societies, broadens our own horizons and perspectives, enriching our learning experience.

British business seeks multilingual employees
Researchers from City Lit recently released an analysis of job adverts in the UK seeking applicants who speak more than one language. The data shows German, French and Spanish are the most in-demand languages – and they’re sought-after in a range of different industries. 5% or more vacancies for roles in recruitment, technology and sales were for multilingual individuals, while over 13% of management roles called for professionals who are fluent in more than just English.
