Painter and Decorator
Painters and Decorators help bring spaces to life with colour – and protect them.
Main responsibilities:
- Prepare surfaces by removing old paint or wallpaper, and filling cracks
- Measure and plan how much paint or wallpaper is needed for each job
- Apply paint and paper using a range of tools and techniques
- Mix and match colours for the perfect shade, sometimes using computerised equipment
- Keep workspaces clean and tidy, and take good care of your tools
Salary range:
£17,000 - £32,000
Colour Consultant
Colour Consultants help clients choose the right colour palettes for their designs.
Main responsibilities:
- Work with clients to understand their needs, often for multiple projects at once
- Keep up to date with the latest designs, trends and colour psychology
- Develop bespoke colour schemes appropriate to the space, lighting and overall design
- Present and recommend your ideas and suggestions to clients
- Potentially lead on sourcing materials and managing projects
Salary range:

Heritage Painter
Heritage Painters specialise in painting and decorating for historic buildings.
Main responsibilities:
- Preserve our cultural heritage by maintaining and restoring historic properties
- Develop specialist knowledge of traditional methods and techniques
- Select materials and techniques to suit the age and type of building
- Use period-correct materials to maintain the character of the structure
- Potentially supervise a team to deliver a project
Salary range:

Self-employed Contractor
Self-employed Contractors hire themselves out for painting and decorating work.
Main responsibilities:
- Advertise your services and meet potential clients to agree work
- Prepare quotes and manage invoicing
- Source materials and maintain a toolset
- Travel to painting and decorating jobs as required
- Keep your workspace safe and tidy, disposing of leftover materials

Taking the Crown for recycling paint cans
We’re proud to see our industry partners, Crown Decorating, play a leading role in sustainability within the painting and decorating industry. Crown’s Can Back scheme lets painters and decorators bring metal paint cans to Crown Decorating Centres for recycling – free of charge. What’s more, they don’t have to be Crown Paint products. They can be from any manufacturer. The scheme is growing, with the most recent figures showing well over a million cans a year.
