The Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping provides students with the fundamental skills required to perform basic bookkeeping tasks. This qualification serves as an entry point for those looking to progress into further study in accountancy or bookkeeping with AAT, pursue employment opportunities, or enhance existing skills for career development.
This course is particularly beneficial for students with minimal work experience, individuals requiring additional support to advance, and those wishing to validate their existing skills before progressing further with AAT. It is also suitable for self-employed individuals or small business owners seeking to manage their own financial records effectively.
Throughout this qualification, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the bookkeeper’s role, including the importance of producing accurate and timely financial records while adhering to ethical principles. They will be introduced to fundamental financial concepts, such as the identification of assets, liabilities, income, expenses, capital, and profit or loss, along with the key differences between cash-based and credit-based trading.
Students will develop the skills required to process financial transactions, including recording customer and supplier transactions, managing receipts and payments, and reconciling amounts against bank statements. They will also be introduced to the concept of the dual effect of transactions, which underpins double-entry bookkeeping and serves as a foundation for those wishing to progress to Level 2 study.
You do not need prior experience in bookkeeping, but you should have basic numeracy and literacy skills.
Due to the professional nature of the AAT qualifications, should you wish to progress further, there are strict standards and requirements for membership to the AAT, in particular surrounding criminal convictions.
Lessons are delivered once a week on a Wednesday morning. It is important that you can commit to this so you do not miss essential delivery.
The course is assessed by one synpotic, end of course exam.
On completion, you will receive the AAT Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping, a nationally recognised qualification that demonstrates your bookkeeping skills to employers and provides a strong foundation for further study.
Students completing this Level 1 AAT Award in Bookkeeping may wish to go on and complete the full Level 2 AAT Certificate in Accounting.
