A group of local education providers test assistive technology at the launch of the Assistive Technology Lending Library at City of Portsmouth College

City of Portsmouth College (COPC) is proud to be the new home of Portsmouth’s Assistive Technology Lending Library (ATLL).

Based at its Highbury Campus and run in partnership with Portsmouth City Council, this citywide initiative gives schools and education providers the opportunities to trial assistive technology in real-world settings before making long-term investment decisions.

Assistive technology includes hardware and software that helps make learning easier for people with learning differences, like dyslexia and dyscalculia, visual impairments, communication difficulties, emotional regulation and motor differences. This can range from brightly-coloured keyboards and C-pen scanners, through to mobile apps and software programs.

A launch event took place at Highbury’s Study Centre, with attendees able to test out some of the technology available for loan, and hearing a presentation from Peter Dennett, Inclusion Adviser at Portsmouth City Council.

He said: “Hosting the ATLL at the Highbury Campus provides an accessible, practical base that supports collaboration across phases and helps promote consistency and continuity in the use of assistive technology, particularly at points of transition into further education.”
