Students at the European Day of Languages celebration

Students from City of Portsmouth College came together to celebrate the rich diversity of languages and cultures across Europe as part of this year's European Day of Languages.

The event brought together students studying A Level Spanish, AS German, and members of the College's Global Students programme for an afternoon of cultural exploration, language sharing and international cuisine.

They shared a variety of foods from across Europe, listened to music from different countries, and took part in conversations about language, culture and life in different parts of the continent.

The event highlighted the importance of languages in connecting people from different backgrounds and creating opportunities for future study, travel and careers. Students were encouraged to share their own experiences, cultures and linguistic skills, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere throughout the day.

For A Level Spanish and AS German students, the event provided an opportunity to apply their language skills beyond the classroom while gaining a deeper understanding of the cultures associated with the languages they study. Global Students brought valuable perspectives from their own countries and experiences, helping to create meaningful cultural exchanges between learners from diverse backgrounds.

European Day of Languages is celebrated annually across the continent to promote multilingualism, cultural diversity and lifelong language learning. The College is proud to support initiatives that encourage students to broaden their horizons, develop global awareness and gain the confidence to engage with an increasingly interconnected world.

The event was a wonderful reminder that language is more than just words – it is a gateway to understanding new cultures, building friendships and opening doors to future opportunities.
