National Air Traffic Services (NATS) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) gave City of Portsmouth College students a taste of what their operations entail with some challenging real-world projects.
A Level Maths, Physics, Engineering, and Economics students had two weeks to work on the projects set by the two organisations, before presenting their findings to NATS and ONS representatives.
Among the topics investigated were proposals for a third runway at Heathrow Airport and patterns of internal migration within the UK, carrying out detailed research, analysing data, and developing evidence-based solutions.
Their presentations demonstrated impressive professionalism, subject knowledge and creativity, and they received excellent feedback from both organisations. Throughout the project, students developed valuable transferable skills including research, teamwork, problem-solving and communication, while gaining a greater understanding of how their learning can be applied in real-world contexts.
