Lifeskills Challenge at City of Portsmouth College is designed for learners working at pre-entry level, particularly those with severe learning difficulties and disabilities. If you are ready, the course also provides opportunities for progression.
The programme, which also includes English and maths, is tailored to your individual starting point, needs, and personal targets, ensuring a personalised learning experience that supports their development and independence.
The course includes:

- health and hygiene
- tutorial
- target setting
- English and maths
This course is based on progression starting points, creating a bespoke course around EHCP and individual targets.
Some students will naturally progress from Lifeskills Bridge, however new students are able to apply for Lifeskills Challenge. Learners should be able to complete classroom tasks with prompts, make choices with minimal support, and participate actively in both individual and group activities. They should demonstrate increasing independence, with a basic awareness of personal safety and environmental risks. Learners should be able to follow college and classroom expectations with prompting, communicate effectively with staff and peers, engage in enrichment activities and show developing skills in managing their emotions and behaviour. Attendance of at least 90% on a full timetable is expected.
The course takes place across three and a half days and attendance of at least 90% on a full timetable is expected.
You will be assessed through a variety of ways (activity, group work, photographic and video), which will be presented through a portfolio of evidence.
All of our programmes are planned around your individual learning needs, with a timetable that clearly identifies the sessions that will be taught. You will be assigned a Programme Lead who will support you throughout your time in College. Teaching, coaching and learning support staff will work closely with you and your parents/carers to help you achieve planned learning goals.
Students showing suitable progress can move into Lifeskills Drive or SAIL Entry 1.
