Level 5 Diploma in Education & Training

This diploma is suitable for your development as teachers, trainers and tutors already working in further education, adult and community learning or work-based training within public, private, voluntary or community organisations. It prepares you to teach in a wide range of contexts and requires observation and assessment of practice. Teaching practice is a requirement of the qualification. This is a two-year, part-time course. Students must be aged 18 or over to join the course.

The TQUK Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training course is a nationally recognised, in-service qualification for teachers or trainers who are currently delivering at least 50 hours teaching or training per year in a further education (FE) college, adult and community learning centre or learning provider (this can be on a paid or voluntary basis). Alternatively, you may be a trainer in the NHS, the armed forces or the private sector. The qualification is a two-year, part-time course, suitable for those in a full teaching role.

It is a recognised route to gaining Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, which allows you to teach in schools, colleges and in further education.

The course will enable you to take a practical and analytical approach to all aspects of training and education, from planning and designing learning through to teaching, assessing and supporting learners. You will learn about the theories and principles of education and training and develop a good understanding of classroom management strategies. In addition, you will study the wider contemporary issues in further education and be given the opportunity to embed these in your own teaching and practice.

Units include:

  • planning and enabling teaching and learning
  • teaching, learning and assessment techniques and strategies
  • teaching a specialist subject
  • use of learning resources
  • wider professional practice
  • action research enquiry
  • reflective practice.

There will also be a minimum of eight teaching observations during the course; four in Year 1 and four in Year 2.

To join the course, you will need to have a minimum of 100 hours of teaching while undertaking the qualification. You will undertake an initial assessment of skills in English, maths and ICT, and the College will provide opportunities for you to achieve or to update a qualification in maths and English if that is required. It is important to commit to achieving English and maths qualifications during the course.

In addition, you are likely to be qualified or have considerable experience in your specialist subject area. All applicants will require a subject specialist mentor to support them through their studies — the College may be able to assist applicants who are unable to meet this requirement.

You will be required to attend college for one three-hour session per week for two academic years. The course is based at Highbury Campus.

Year 1 of the course takes place on a Thursday evening from 5–9pm

Year 2 of the course takes place on a Wednesday evening from 5-9pm.

You will learn through a variety of teaching and learning strategies, including group and paired activities, experiential learning as well as through lectures, seminars and presentations. This will also include independent study, research and project work. You will be formally assessed through coursework, and your observed teaching sessions will be assessed by one of your tutors and by your subject specialist mentor.

School Leavers under the age of 19 do not have to pay fees on any full time courses, though may have to pay for their second year if turning 19 during their studies. If you’re aged 19 or over you might qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. It’s easy to apply for and you won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £25,000. If you are studying a part-time course and you receive one of the following benefits, or you depend financially on someone who does, you may be entitled to have your tuition fees waived: Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support. You will, however, have to pay any awarding body/assessment fees (unless you are on a first full level 2 course). * If you are in receipt of Working Tax Credit or receive other allowances, you may be eligible to claim concessionary rates. If you are entitled to a fee concession you will be asked to provide proof of your entitlement. It is essential that you inform us if your entitlement changes at any time during your course.

This qualification prepares you to teach in a wide range of contexts within public, private, voluntary or community organisations.
