A college tutor supporting an adult learner during a gas training session, reviewing paperwork together at a workbench with gas equipment.

If you're a qualified plumber who wants to become a fully qualified gas engineer, then City of Portsmouth College's Gas Managed Learning Programme is your first step.

This comprehensive course provides the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to work safely and competently with gas appliances and installations.

You'll cover core gas safety principles, legislation, and industry standards, alongside hands-on training in installation, servicing, and maintenance of domestic gas systems. The programme also prepares you for ACS assessments, enabling you to register with Gas Safe and start a rewarding career in the gas sector.

Trainees who lack gas training and experience will need to hold a recognised qualification in the mechanical services engineering sector (e.g. plumbing), or they will have gained a minimum of two GCSE's (grade C, or equivalent, preferably English, maths or relevent experience) or an entry assessment.

This course covers a total of 42 days across a year – one evening per week during term time.

Assessments normally consist of a combination of practical and theory examinations.

Completing the Gas Managed Learning Programme opens the door to becoming a fully qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. After passing your ACS assessments, you can progress into specialist areas such as boiler installation and servicing, gas metering, LPG systems, and even commercial gas qualifications.

This course is the foundation for a rewarding career in the gas industry, with opportunities to work in domestic, commercial, and industrial environments or to start your own business as a certified gas engineer.

Fees for this course must be paid in full.
