This course will begin with an introduction to the pronunciation of the main vowel sounds, leading to an exploration of cognates and near cognates as a basis from which to develop a German vocabulary.
You will explore how consonant shifts can help you predict meanings of new words you'll encounter. You'll learn how to use verbs, first of all looking at their infinitive form and then learn how to conjugate them in the present tense. You'll progress from word level to sentence and text level and look for spelling patterns to help deduce meaning.
You will also begin to explore word order and sentence structure and discover how German expresses ideas in a different order to English. Throughout the course, we will build a bank of transactional vocabulary that will be useful to hold a short, basic conversation in real life.
The four main skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking will be the focus point of our lessons to ensure you begin to become rounded linguists.
This is for complete beginners or for those who have some basic skills in German looking to refresh, develop and extend their skills and confidence in the language.
This course will be held for 1.5 hours a week, Thursdays 6-7.30pm (term time only). You will be expected to attend all of your timetabled sessions on time, unless prior agreement has been made and agreed with your tutor.
If a student arrives more than 10 minutes late for class they may be asked to leave. If a student is absent for three consecutive weeks without notice they will automatically be withdrawn from the course.
While you will not receive a formal qualification, this fun and informative course will help expand and practise your skills in German.
You will, through the careful study of the above, be able to understand the fundamental principles behind the grammatical system and apply these in your speaking and writing to form basic, but clear and coherent sentences, using a developing vocabulary.
You could then go on to study German for Improvers.
